Coach Dexter grew up in Columbus, OH and attended North High
School his sophomore and junior year, where he played football and basketball.
He attended Linden McKinley High School in his senior year, where his basketball
team made it to the final four State Championship in 1980. He then went to Sioux
Empire College in Hawarden, Iowa where he played basketball before graduating
with his Associate’s Degree.
In 1998, Coach Dexter founded the organization This Is My
Game. This Is My Game focuses on future basketball players
introducing them to basketball skills and fundamentals in a very positive and
caring environment. Having fun is a critical aspect of this program because we
believe that if learning is fun, students will never cease to want to learn. We
welcome the opportunity to spend time teaching them the great game of
basketball, on and off the court, mental toughness, ball handling, and team
offense and defense fundamentals. He also practices sportsmanship development
during open practice sessions.
He coaches year round basketball and spring baseball for boys
in the Columbus, Ohio area. Coach Dexter has volunteered coaching basketball at
the Northeast Recreation Center, Woodward Park Recreation Center, and the
Gahanna 5th and 6th grade traveling basketball team. He is
an active member of the National Youth Sports Coaches Association, the
Mentoring Student Athletes Foundation and the Ohio Commission on
African-American Males. Coach Dexter has also volunteered at the Woody Hayes
Celebrity Golf Classic since 1996.
In addition, Coach Dexter dedicates his time to First Team
Basketball Inc. a non-profit organization that is committed to using basketball
and other sports as vehicles to introduce the Gospel and Hope of Jesus Christ to
children. First Team has reached more than 1,500 kids by conducting Basketball
camps and clinics as well as hosting social activities across the United States.
Coach Dexter has enjoyed phenomenal success in the Nike League and the
Northern Columbus Athletics Association. His and his teams’ honors include:
